The ImmunoMod Approach to Diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune condition in which an individual's insulin producing pancreatic beta cells are destroyed. Without intervention, patients become dependent on exogenous insulin to maintain normal blood glucose levels. Recent studies have focused on a short window of time known as the honeymoon period in which patients experience a varying degree of remission after their initial diagnosis. Promising studies have shown this period to be a potential opportunity in which protection of beta cells may reverse the disease
ImmunoMod’s therapeutics function by inhibiting factors which are believed to induce beta cell death.
Though extensive efforts have been made, available treatments to decelerate beta cell destruction, have had transitory efficacy, and elicited toxic side effects. ImmunoMod’s current lead drug candidate IM-ASN, which has a solid safety profile, has shown efficacy in preserving beta cell function and increasing insulin production in animal trials as well as a compassionate human study.
